Thomas Adams

Founded in 1650, Thomas Adams is a successful co-educational community school, sixth form and boarding house in the centre of Wem, North Shropshire.

We provide a supportive environment in which our students are able to uncover their underlying talents, their passions and their interests that will lead them towards a positive and bright future.

We take pride in the way in which students are guided and challenged every step of the way, from the transition from primary school in Year 7 to winning places at competitive universities in Year 13. We respect each other, we celebrate success and we instil resilience, preparing children for tomorrow’s world.

We understand that for young people to achieve their potential they need to feel happy, safe and valued. Therefore, our pastoral system is at the heart of everything we do. Our caring ethos, combined with close monitoring of attendance and progress, gives parents the reassurance that we will take action promptly if concerned.

Students attend Thomas Adams from our local primary schools and many more travel from a wider catchment area on subsidised buses that run from Whitchurch, Shrewsbury, Market Drayton, Hodnet, Baschurch, Oswestry and Ellesmere. The school is renowned for its

music, sport and drama provisions. We have specialist centres for these subjects including full performance facilities, a multiuse sports centre, extensive playing fields and a fitness suite.

There are two main sites on our 30-acre campus. The Lowe Hill buildings cater for Years 7-11, providing excellent facilities for all curricular areas. At the Noble Street site we have our Sixth Form, housed in the attractive grammar school building. We offer more than 25 subjects at A-level and BTEC combined with a community feel and excellent pastoral care.

Gertie, Year 9, said:

“Thomas Adams has a great learning environment. Lessons are engaging and the teachers and staff are very helpful.” We also have a thriving boarding provision, Adams House, which

accommodates students from the UK and from overseas. Adams House is a state boarding school for students aged 11-19. Increasingly, parents are choosing state boarding schools ahead of boarding in the independent sector as they see that they can obtain the education and exceptional pastoral care they are seeking for a fraction of the cost. Parents pay only

for boarding, and the government pays for education as it would at any other state school in England.

By selecting Adams House, parents are choosing top quality boarding care, with staff who are absolutely committed to the wellbeing of young people.

It’s a unique setting that promotes common experience, friendship, trust and honesty between young people and adults. We celebrate diversity and are pleased to welcome students from a variety of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. The lessons in life learned at Adams House will lay a solid foundation for adulthood, and friendships are made

that last forever. Why not take our virtual tours? To truly understand our supportive atmosphere and ethos, take an insight into Thomas Adams by visiting our website
