Existing for over 350 years, OSH has the air of a school whose values are deeply rooted in the beliefs of its founder, Thomas Foley, yet with an outlook that is undeniably forward thinking.
Rated Outstanding for boarding by Ofsted and bringing together boarders and day pupils within its community, OSH prides itself on offering a different kind of educational experience, where learning doesn’t end at the final school bell; diversity of life is embraced rather than tolerated, and learning to live – and not simply work – alongside each other is a life skill that cannot be underestimated.
Preparing pupils for the future underpins everything, from the broad academic curriculum to an array of extracurricular opportunities.
OSH encourages pupils to ‘discover who they can be’: winners of a national rugby title (the NatWest Bowl), becoming national engineering champions, debating at the European Parliament in Georgia, playing netball in Malta and rugby in South Africa, North America and Argentina, visiting the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland and performing orchestral music in European cathedrals to name just a few.
Academically, OSH is the highest performing state school within the Dudley Borough at GCSE, and nationally ranks highly amongst all state schools in terms of progress and attainment.
With an eye on the future, Mandarin is taught, and all pupils take end of year exams as well as regular end of topic tests. A-level and BTEC students have support with careers guidance, work experience and university applications.
Year 7pupils begin their OSH journey as either boarders, flexi-boarders or day pupils. Flexi and full boarders pay a fee which includes access to boarding houses and after school activities, but day places are free as pupils only come into school for lessons.
All pupils will encounter great variety in their school day, from rugby, Shakespeare and coding to representation on school councils and inter-house competitions.
Beyond lessons, flexi and full boarders have over 30 extra-curricular activities on offer – most of which are included in the termly fixed fee – and from Year 9 can develop adventure skills through Combined Cadet Force and the Duke of Edinburgh awards.
The school has a strong culture of pastoral support for all of its pupils and in boarding this extends to their life in the boarding community where boys and girls each have their own boarding houses staffed with dedicated house support teams.
There is no rocket science as to how OSH operates; it is a community that works hard, plays hard and tries hard to look out for those around them. Why don’t you come and discover who your child can be?
