St James Academy is an inclusive and welcoming school. Principal Ian Moore at St James Academy takes a personal approach, making an effort to learn the names and personalities of each and every learner. Staff and learners are proud of the diverse cultures represented and the rich mixture of backgrounds.

“Life Chances for all learners” sits at the heart of the academy and is evidenced daily through high ambition for learners both academically and in the delivery of important life skills. The performance of each learner is recorded and actively monitored on a week-by-week basis. Staff know which learners might need more support and provide support and challenge in order to ensure that each learner is given the best chances in life. This approach has transformed learner performance, but many other aspects of what learners experience are equally positive. Independence and key skills around preparation for public examinations are taught in order to support our ambitious and articulate learners.

Learners are challenged to extend their interests through a wide programme of extra-curricular activities, sports teams, trips and visits. The careers programme helps learners to focus on their futures and motivates them to work hard and develop their self-confidence. The Principal and Senior leaders are consistently visible around the school, talking to learners about their lessons, their other activities knowing the young people at the academy. Learners have plenty of opportunities to pursue other interests, as the academy has large playing fields and excellent facilities for sport and drama.
