Great Wyrley High School has been on quite a journey over the past few years and is set to become an academy this academic year.
A spokesman for the school said: “We have a growing offer at post-16 and have some exciting plans to expand our curriculum throughout the school.
“This year, we have introduced separate GCSE Sciences to run alongside Science double award and we have increased the number of English and Maths lessons from Year 7 onwards.
“Great Wyrley High School is proud to announce the launch of The Excellence Academy.
Students will be selected to join this new feature of our school based on test results, interview and application.
Places will be made available to 20% of pupils in a particular year group who display general higher levels of ability or specialist skills.
Pupils enrolled into The Excellence Academy will experience a range of unusual extra curricula lessons and experiences, visits, expert visitors and new opportunities to help them make rapid progress with the intention of them being able to be offered a place at one of the countries prestigious universities or
within an esteemed profession.
All pupils will be able to apply for a place providing they can demonstrate their ability.
“We have put in place systems that remove barriers to excellent lessons which include a firm stance on behaviour and expectations for learning.
“We have built expertise in cooperative learning and have developed an accelerated learning cycle for our lesson planning.
Pupils are assessed regularly to track their progress and provide us with the information we need to ensure our lessons cater for every individual’s need.
“The voice of students is essential for us in establishing a community of learners and to help us achieve clear and regular communication and feedback.
“We have an elected Pupil Leadership Team who meet with the Headteacher every week to discuss initiatives and put plans in place.
Rewards for those working hard towards their targets have included an inflatable theme park on site, trips to universities, Alton Towers, Music and Arts festivals (G Fest) and special theme days.
Trips and visits are a vital part of our pupils’ educational experience, every department has organised educational visits, visitors and special events.
“We have planned trips next year to Berlin (History), Iceland (Geography), France (skiing), Belgium (Soul Band), South Africa (Link for Life) and China as a cultural exchange.
“We are very proud of our Performing Arts programmes and we are now offering Dance, Drama and Music from Year 7 up to the end of school.
Our theatrical productions are envied in the region and take place in our purpose built theatre.
Our Performing Arts specialism is maintained by a range of in-school specialists and we offer tuition in the full choice of orchestral instruments up to Grade 8.
