STAFF AT BEDSTONE COLLEGE ENSURE CHILDREN ARE FULLY IMMERSED IN LIFE AT THE SENIOR SCHOOL BEFORE MAKING THE BIG MOVE INTO YEAR 7

Bedstone College

‘Moving up’ is always an anxious time for both parents and children.

That’s why children at Bedstone College are fully immersed in life at the senior school before they head in to Year 7.

Staff at Bedstone believe that encouraging children to mix across the age groups in a safe, familyorientated environment will help Year 6 pupils integrate effectively within the senior school.

For children coming from other schools a number of events are organised throughout the year to help them settle in as quickly as possible.

Bedstone offers regular personalised taster sessions where prospective pupils can come along for the day, meet their classmates and teachers and find out more about day to day life at Bedstone College.

Students are also encouraged to take advantage of the great outdoors with weekly activities.

Bedstone College, a British boarding and day school for boys and girls from four to 18, is set in the heart of south Shropshire, the school’s rural surrounds and magnificent Victorian calendar house provide an enviable, safe setting for under 250 pupils.

Bedstone’s Headmaster David Gajadharsingh said: “Deliberately small, we are not academically selective but focus on bringing out the very best in each child.

Our students come from a very wide range of backgrounds and abilities; yet each of them has something within them that is very special.

It is this focus on trying to uncover that special talent and using it to build confidence and selfesteem that makes Bedstone much more than a school, but rather a family.”

With strong pastoral care and in small class sizes, students usually exceed their expectations – in the classroom and beyond.

Bedstone is also a CReSTeD Specialist Dyslexia Unit, providing learning support for some 10-15% of the student cohort. Outings, an enriched curriculum, theme days, away fixtures and visiting experts all enhance the learning experience for children at Bedstone.

The school’s highly-qualified teachers are dedicated to enabling the children to achieve their very best.

Numbers of international students are carefully controlled to ensure language cliques do not develop.

With a high percentage of children being British, Bedstone ensures full immersion in a traditional British boarding school for all overseas students.

There are four boarding houses, two for boys and two for girls; the junior boarding houses are home for students up to and including Year 10 with Years 11 to 13 living in the senior boarding houses.

Bedstone has a strong sporting and extra-curricular life where young pupils discover new talents and pursuits and have plenty to keep them challenged and happy, whether playing basketball or tennis, using the heated pool, fullyequipped gym, the state-of-the-art music school or dance studio. Students are also
encouraged to take advantage of the great outdoors with weekly activities including mountain biking, DofE, horse riding and much more.

Investments have also been made in a new all-weather pitch which is now in use and future plans include a complete refurbishment of the school’s science labs.

Mr Gajadharsingh said: “We have just completed the installation of a new all-weather playing surface.

We have refurbished the common rooms of all the boarding houses.

We have installed new IT systems and upgraded our IT room facilities and we have purchased 40 new iPADS for the launch of a new ‘Mobile Classroom Initiative’ in September 2017.

There is much more in the pipeline which will include, amongst other things, a complete refurbishment of all the science laboratories, new digital projectors for
classrooms and further enhancements to college infrastructure.”

Staff are proud that children don’t get ‘lost’ at Bedstone; it is a place in which every child really does matter.

Bedstone College is hosting an Open Day on October 7.
